What Real Food Means to Me | Wat Ware Kos vir My Beteken

What is real food?

I define real food as food that is as close to its natural and original state as possible. Real food isn't produced in a factory, it is not engineered in a lab, nor is it full of artificial coloúrs, sweeteners, or flavours.

We eat a Whole Food diet in our house and we try to eat Whole Foods at least 80 - 90% of the time.  It's not always possible, I mean with three little rascals in the house there is bound to be a non Whole Food somewhere in the mix.  But by living on a 80/20 rule (eating clean 80% of the time), those few slip-ups are few and far between.

Buying organic is also not always possible, but trying to source the best quality meat, fruit, veg, nuts etc. is a big priority in our house.  Buying from your local Farmers Market is usually cheaper than your nearest grocery store and then you can talk to the Farmer about how he grows his veggies or what he feeds his cattle.

Here is a list of Whole Foods we enjoy in abundance:

Fresh Produce: Fruits, Vegetables

Dairy products: Milk (Raw and from Pasture Raised Cows or Goats), Cheese, Yogurt, Kefir and Eggs (Free Range & Organic if possible)

Seafood: Wild caught favours farmed

Meat: Only locally raised grass-fed beef, pork, chicken, lamb/mutton.  (Animals not receiving anti-biotics & growth hormones!)

Fats:  Grass-fed Butter, Lard, Tallow, Coconut Oil and Olive Oil

Natural Sweetners: Honey & Maple Syrup.  In South Africa we have an abundance of natural raw honey.  Try to source honey that was sourced in your area.  Look for non-irradiated honey.

Snacks: Dried Fruit, Popcorn (GMO free), Nuts and Seeds (organic whenever possible)

Beverages: Water, Tea, Coffee, Milk, Natural Juices (Juice your own fruits & vegetables), Kombucha, good quality Wine & Beer (in moderation).

The rule of thumb is to always look for products with the fewest ingredient, 5 or less is a good guideline.  If you read the ingredients list on the back of the food packaging and there are ingredients on that list that you cannot even pronounce, don't even bother putting it in your trolley.  Avoid sugar, colourants, flavourants and preservatives. For instance, if you pick up a can of whole peeled tomotoes, the ingredients should ony be tomatoes & salt.  No need to buy a product with more ingredients than necessary!

Vars Produkte: Vrugte, Groente

Suiwelprodukte: Melk (Rou en van Vrylopende Bokke of Koeie ), Kaas, Jogurt, Kefir en Eiers (Vrylopend & Organies indien moontlik)

Seekos: Wild gevang is beter as 'n vis boerdery sin

Vleis: Slegs plaaslike, vrylopende en gras gevoerde beesvleis, varkvleis, hoender, lam/skaap . (Diere ontvang nie antibiotika en groeihormone!)

Vette: Gras gevoerde Botter, Varkvet, Beesvet, Klapper olie en Olyf Olie

Natuurlike Versoeters: Heuning & Esdoring Stroop .
